Seeking Him

Seeking Him can be a challenge unless we are open to intentionally seeking those changes in our lives. Here are some ways we can do just that. 

1. Daily Reflection and Prayer

Start each day with a moment of reflection and prayer. This practice helps you set your intentions for the day and seek God's guidance. Reflect on your priorities and ask for wisdom to make the most of your time.

2. Set Meaningful Goals

Identify specific goals that align with God's priorities for your life. These could be spiritual, relational, or personal development goals. Break them down into manageable steps and track your progress throughout the month.

3. Create a Balanced Schedule

Plan your days with intentionality, ensuring you allocate time for work, rest, and activities that nourish your soul. A balanced schedule helps you stay focused on what truly matters and prevents burnout.

4. Engage in Acts of Kindness

Look for opportunities to serve others and show kindness. Whether it's volunteering, helping a neighbor, or simply offering a listening ear, these acts of kindness reflect God's love and bring joy to both you and those you serve.

5. Limit Distractions

Identify and minimize distractions that consume your time and attention. This might include setting boundaries with technology, creating a focused work environment, or prioritizing activities that align with your goals.

Using our time wisely: Embracing God's priorities

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it's easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Psalm 90:12 reminds us of the importance of numbering our days and seeking wisdom. But how can we intentionally use our time wisely on a regular basis in light of God's priorities? Let's explore some practical ways to align our lives with His will and make the most of the time we've been given.


Understanding the value of time

Time is a precious gift from God, and each day is an opportunity to grow closer to Him and fulfill His purposes. By recognizing the fleeting nature of our days, we can develop a heart of wisdom that guides our decisions and actions. This wisdom helps us prioritize what truly matters and avoid getting caught up in the distractions of the world. It's true that life happens and it's our jobs to prioritize when life gets to lifing. Just remembering that we should put God first, then our spouse, family, etc., will help us to navigate life in a very prioritized fashion. 

Seeking God's priorities 

To use our time wisely, we must first understand God's priorities. These include:

  1. Loving God and loving others: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" Matthew 22: 37-39. As indicated in the previous passage, the greatest commandments are to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and to love others as we love ourselves. This means dedicating time to worship, prayer, and acts of kindness. 
  2. Spiritual growth: God desires for us to grow in our faith and knowledge of Him. This may look like spending time in His Word, participating in fellowship with other believers, or seeking spiritual disciplines. What this looks like may appear a little different depending on the season you are walking through currently. 
  3. Serving others: We are called to serve and care for those in need. While many see this as the work of field missionaries, we must remember that God calls some to be community missionaries at home. This can be through volunteering, offering support to friends and family, or simply by being a listening ear. 
  4. Rest and renewal: God values rest and renewal. Taking time to rest, reflect, and recharge is essential for maintaining our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Take one day a week to disconnect from life's distractions and reconnect and recharge with your Lord and Savior along with your family. 

Practical steps to use time wisely

  • Set Priorities: Begin by identifying your top priorities in light of God's will. Make a list of what matters most and allocate time for these activities each day.
  • Create a Schedule: Plan your days and weeks with intentionality. Use a planner or digital calendar to schedule time for prayer, Bible study, family, work, and rest.
  • Eliminate Distractions: Identify and minimize distractions that consume your time. This may include limiting screen time, setting boundaries with social media, or creating a focused work environment.
  • Practice Gratitude: Cultivate a heart of gratitude by reflecting on God's blessings each day. This practice can help you stay focused on what truly matters and appreciate the time you have.
  • Seek Accountability: Share your goals and priorities with a trusted friend or mentor. Having someone to encourage and hold you accountable can help you stay on track.
  • Be Flexible: Life is unpredictable, and it's important to remain flexible. Trust that God is in control and be open to adjusting your plans as needed.

Recipe Roundup

 And here we are at our third and final installment of our foodie series. Enjoy the following recipes! 

1. One-Pot Spaghetti

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cups chicken or beef broth
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 8 oz spaghetti
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, cook the ground beef or turkey over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot and cook until softened.
  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, broth, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  4. Break the spaghetti in half and add it to the pot. Stir to combine.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the spaghetti is cooked and the sauce has thickened.
  6. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.

2. Sheet Pan Chicken Fajitas

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, sliced into strips

  • 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Flour tortillas
  • Toppings: sour cream, guacamole, salsa, shredded cheese

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the chicken strips, bell peppers, onion, olive oil, chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat.
  3. Spread the mixture evenly on a baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the vegetables are tender.
  5. Serve the chicken and vegetables in flour tortillas with your favorite toppings.

3. Baked Ziti

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ziti pasta
  • 1 lb Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  4. Stir in the marinara sauce, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  5. In a large bowl, combine the cooked ziti, sausage mixture, and ricotta cheese. Mix well.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish and top with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

4. Chicken and Broccoli Stir-Fry

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce

  • Cooked rice, for serving

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, and cornstarch. Set aside.
  2. In a large skillet or wok, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the chicken strips and cook until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the broccoli, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until the vegetables are tender-crisp.
  5. Return the chicken to the skillet and pour the sauce over the top. Stir to coat everything evenly.
  6. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
  7. Serve the stir-fry over cooked rice.

5. BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 lb pork shoulder or butt
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Hamburger buns
  • Coleslaw (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Season the pork shoulder with salt and pepper.
  2. Place the sliced onion in the bottom of a slow cooker. Add the pork shoulder on top.
  3. Pour the chicken broth over the pork and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or until the pork is tender and easily shredded.
  4. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and shred it using two forks.
  5. Mix the shredded pork with BBQ sauce.
  6. Serve the pulled pork on hamburger buns with coleslaw, if desired.

Trusting God to Provide: Finding Peace in His Promises

"And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:19 (ESV)

In a world filled with uncertainty and challenge, it's easy to find ourselves consumed by worry and anxiety. We ask ourselves how our needs will be met? We wonder if we will have what we need to navigate the demands of our lives? However. we should find peace in the promise of Philippians 4:19. This verse offers profound assurance: God will supply every need of ours according to His riches. But what does it mean to truly trust God to provide? How can we shift from a mindset of anxiety to one of faith in our creator?

Understanding God's provision


Provision - the act of providing or supplying something for use; an amount of something supplied

God's provision is not limited to our physical needs. Let's read that again: God's provision is not limited to our physical needs. Okay, ready to move forward? God's provision encompases every single aspect of our lives. It does not matter how big or how small. God provides it all. Yahweh promises to provide for our spiritual, emotional, and relational needs. This comprehensive care is rooted in His infinite riches and glory. Think about that for a moment. God's infinite riches are far beyond what the human can understand. Trusting in God's provision means we recognize that He is our bank. He is the source of everything we need. From finances to a friend who is lending a shoulder to cry on. God is and provides EVERYTHING. 

Identifying areas of concern

Embracing the promises of the Lord, we must first identify the areas in our lives where we tend to stress the most. These might include: 
  • Finances: Worrying about how to pay the bills, get out of debt, and general financial stability can be overly thought consuming. Trusting God means believing that He will provide for our needs and guide us in making wise decisions. 
  • Medical/Health: Concerns about our health or the health of loved ones can be overwhelming. Trusting God involves surrendering our fears and believing that He is in control, regardless of the outcome. And sometimes, his healing is spiritual not physical so we have to trust that when He calls our loved ones home it is because it is part of His plan. 
  • Relationships: Strained relationships can be a source off worry. Loneliness or finding the right person can weigh heavily on our hearts. When we trust the Lord, we are saying we believe that He will bring the right people into our lives and mend broken relationships. Remember, we live our lives in seasons. Sometimes people come and people go - just like the seasons change. God will provide who we need WHEN we need them. 
  • An uncertain future: Fear of the unknown can be a significant source of anxiety. Sometimes this fear is rooted in PTSD caused by things in our past. Trusting that God has our future in His hands and believing that He has a perfect plan for our lives is key to stress reduction and walking closer with our Lord and Savior.

Practical steps to trusting God

All that said, how does one practice a life of Trusting God? 
  1. Prayer: Bring your worries to God in prayer. Share your concerns with Him and ask for His guidance and provision. Prayer is a powerful way to connect with God and find peace in His presence. If you ask yourself how to pray, it's as simple as talking to your bestie. Just talk to Him. 
  2. Meditate on Scripture: Filling your mind with God's promises will remind you of His faithfulness and provision. Look up and read scriptures like Philippians 4:19. 
  3. Practice gratitude: Focus on blessings you already have and express how grateful you are for them. This perspective shift will help reduce worry and increase the trust you have in your Savior. 
  4. Seek community: Surrounding yourself in a community of believers who support, encourage, and pray for you helps you learn to trust God. Share your burdens with others to lighten the load and strengthen your faith. 
  5. Take action: Trusting God doesn't mean that you are being passive. Take practical steps to address any concerns you have while trusting that He will guide and provide. 
In closing, trusting God to provide is a journey of faith that requires us to let go of our worries and embrace the promises of God. As we place our trust in Him, we can find peace and assurance in knowing that He will supply every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. As we navigate through different seasons of life, the call to delight in the Lord remains constant. But what does it truly mean to delight in God, and how can we experience this joy and fulfillment in our current season? Let's explore the depth of this beautiful verse and its application in our lives.

Understanding Delight in the Lord

To delight in the Lord means to find our greatest joy and satisfaction in Him. It involves a deep, intimate relationship with God where we seek His presence, cherish His Word, and align our desires with His will. Delighting in God is not about seeking temporary pleasures or material gains; it's about finding that deeper truer place of contentment and peace that can only be found in our Creator.

The Desires of Your Heart

When we delight in the Lord, our desires begin to reflect His desires. Our hearts are transformed, and we start to long for what pleases Him. This alignment of our desires with God's will leads to a life of purpose and fulfillment. It's a beautiful exchange where our earthly wants are replaced with divine aspirations. The challenge is to take a moment of pause to evaluate if we are thinking about our desires from a fleshy place or if we have consulted Him and are moving forward with His spiritual plan for our lives in the season we are in.

Delighting in God in This Season

In every season of life, whether it's a time of joy, struggle, or transition, we can find ways to delight in the Lord. Here are some practical steps to help you experience this joy:

1.     Spend Time in Prayer and Worship: Make it a priority to spend quality time with God through prayer and worship. This intimate connection will deepen your relationship with Him and fill your heart with His peace.

2.    Meditate on His Word: The Bible is a treasure trove of wisdom and encouragement. Take time to read and meditate on Scripture, allowing God's Word to guide and inspire you.

3.    Serve Others: One of the most fulfilling ways to delight in the Lord is by serving others. Look for opportunities to show kindness, offer support, and make a positive impact in your community.

4.   Practice Gratitude: Cultivate a heart of gratitude by regularly reflecting on God's blessings in your life. This practice will shift your focus from what you lack to the abundance of His love and provision.

5.    Trust in His Plan: Trusting in God's plan, even when it's not clear, is a vital aspect of delighting in Him. Surrender your worries and uncertainties to Him, knowing that He is in control and has a perfect plan for your life.

Tips for making family meals fun

 Welcome back for part 2 of my family meals series. Today I thought I'd give you a few tips for keeping everyone coming back to the table for more! 

  1. Get everyone involved: Encourage each family member to participate in meal preparation. Assign age-appropriate tasks, such as washing vegetables, setting the table, or stirring ingredients. This not only makes the process more enjoyable, but also teaches valuable cooking skills. 
  2. Theme nights: Introduce theme nights to add excitement to your meals. Whether it's Taco Tuesday, Pizza Friday, or Breakfast for Dinner, having a theme can make mealtime something to look forward to and get everyone excited to help prepare the meal. 
  3. Create a DIY Station: Set up a DIY station where family members can customize their meals. For example, a taco bar with various toppings, a salad bar with different ingredients, or a pizza station with assorted toppings. This allows everyone to get creative and make their meal just the way they like it.
  4. Play games: Incorporate fun games into your mealtime routine. Simple games like 20 questions, I spy, or would you rather can keep the conversation lively and entertaining. On the other hand, if you are a role playing family, play a one-shot Dungeons & Dragons campaign with the food centered around the campaign setting for a fun story telling experience.  
  5. Share Stories: Speaking of storytelling, use mealtime as an opportunity to share stories and experiences. Each family member can take turns talking about their day, sharing a funny anecdote, or discussing something they learned. This fosters communication and strengthens the family bond.
  6. Cook together: Plan a cooking session where the whole family can cook a meal together. Choose a recipe that everyone can contribute to and enjoy the process of creating something delicious as a team. 
  7. Decorate the table: Make the dining area special by decorating the table. Use colorful placemats, fun napkins, or seasonal decorations to create a festive atmosphere. Involving kids in the decoration process can also make them feel more invested in the meal.
  8. Try new recipes: Keeping things interesting can sometimes be a challenge. Lighten the load by trying new recipes and cuisines. Exploring different flavors can make mealtime an adventure and introduce your family to new favorite foods. 
  9. Music and Ambiance: Play some background music to set the mood. Choose a playlist that everyone enjoys, and let the music add to the overall dining experience.

A little trip

What an amazing time we've had escaping life and spending time with the grands. One of our favorite things to do is to just spend quality time with family.  In light of all that has transpired, we like to take time to stand back and just soak in the quality time. 

Today, we found ourselves going for a quick drive to Jeter Mountain Farm for some apple cider donuts and slushies. It's always a beautiful trip. I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I do! 

I was able to sneak a photo of the girls rocking with YiaYia on the porch after their donuts. Ahhh, what a timeless memory! 

Another guest was kind enough to snap a group photo of all four of us really quickly. Can I just say - WAIT JUST A MINUTE HOW DID MADDIE OUTGROW US ALL???

There was a wagon with the most beautiful pink flowers on it and I just couldn't not snap a shot. 

On the way out, we were able to snap a beautiful photo of the orchard. Just breath taking! 

A trip to the orchard wouldn't be complete without an Apple Cider Donut from the bakery. And yes, Miss Mads had her cider slushie too :) 

While we didn't ride on the shuttle this time because we parked too close, if you park in the lower lot, they will bring a tractor pull to you and you get to ride up to the top in the open air. It's one of our favorite ways to travel. Just something about being in that wagon.

I look around me and see that many times families opt for the drive through on the go rather than a meal with their loved ones around their own table consuming food that doesn’t come loaded with preservatives, fat, and comes out of a paper bag. Sitting around the table together allows everyone to share their experiences, discuss their day, and engage in meaningful conversations. This regular interaction helps build trust, understanding, and a sense of belonging among family members. It creates a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and heard.

Home-cooked meals have a secret ingredient. LOVE. Additionally, children who participate in family meals (both eating and helping to prepare them) are more likely to develop positive eating habits, such as trying new foods and making healthier food choices. Fun and easy FALL crafts for all ages

 

As the leaves change color and the air turns crisp, it's the perfect time to get creative with some fun and easy fall crafts. Whether you're looking for activities to do with kids, or just want to add a touch of autumn to your home decor, these simple crafts are perfect for all ages. Let's dive into some delightful fall projects that you can enjoy with family and friends.

Leaf Rubbing Art

Suggested ages: 3 and up. 

This craft is perfect for young children as it helps develop fine motor skills and allows them to explore different textures and colors. It's also a fun and relaxing activity for older kids and adults sitting around the table with a piping mug of hot cider. 

Materials Needed:

  • Freshly fallen leaves
  • White paper
  • Crayons

Instructions:

  1. Collect a variety of leaves from your yard or a nearby park.

  3. Using the side of a crayon, gently rub over the paper to reveal the leaf's shape and veins.

Pinecone Bird Feeders

Suggested ages: 5 and up. 

This craft is great for kids who are a bit older and can handle spreading peanut butter and rolling the pinecone in birdseed. It's a wonderful way to teach children about nature and the importance of feeding birds during the fall and winter months. As an added bonus, the children will love to see the different wildlife attracted to the peanut butter and birdseeds (birds, squirrels, etc)

  • Pinecones
  • Peanut butter
  • Birdseed
  • String

Instructions:

  1. Tie a piece of string to the top of a pinecone.
  2. Spread peanut butter all over the pinecone, making sure to get it into the crevices.
  3. Roll the peanut butter-covered pinecone in birdseed until it's fully coated.
  4. Hang the pinecone bird feeder from a tree branch and watch the birds enjoy their treat.

Suggested ages: 4 and up. 

Pumpkin painting is a versatile craft that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. As the crisp air of September begins to settle, leaves slowly transition into vibrant tapestries of red and gold, and the world seems to breath in renewal. There is something profoundly stirring about the arrival of a new month - a gentle invitation to pause, reflect, and embrace fresh opportunities within our families. The changing seasons are a beautiful reminder that God's creation is always in motion, reflecting His ongoing work in our hearts and homes. 

Growth: Stepping forward together

The turn of the season beckons us to consider how we are growing, both individually and as a family. Just as trees shed their leaves to prepare for new life, we are invited to let go of old habits and step boldly into what God has prepared. Reflecting on Philippians 3:13-14, we find encouragement: "...forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." As a family, discussing personal and collective goals for the coming weeks can spark meaningful conversations and create a sense of shared purpose. Whether it's reading scripture together, trying a new activity, or supporting one another's dreams, September is an ideal time to nurture growth.

New Beginnings for Families

 Embracing the promise of change together

Webster defines change as the act of making something different. In society, we have been conditioned that change is bad. I would encourage you to step outside of whatever change you are facing and try to see things from a different perspective. You see, I've learned over the years that without change, there cannot be growth. This is true in our personal, professional, and spiritual lives. As we embark on the remainder of the month of September, I challenge you to decide to embrace change as a GOOD THING and not as something that should be feared. 

The air shifts gently, that unmistakable crispness signaling September's arrival and the subtle turning of the seasons (and leaves). As sun-dappled afternoons give way to the golden embrace of autumn, families find themselves at the threshold of new routines, fresh opportunities, and the comforting rhythm of togetherness. September is more than a change on the calendar. It's an invitation and opportunity to begin again - to set intentions, nurture faith, and delight in the simple joys each day brings. 

For many, September conjures images of sharpened pencils, backpacks slung over shoulders, and the eager anticipation of another school year. Yet beyond the classroom, this month calls us to pause and reflect. What seeds will we plant in our homes and hearts? What habits of gratitude, kindness, and wonder will we foster as the year matures further? 

Start by gathering with your family, perhaps over a steaming mug of cider or beneath a canopy of shifting leaves. Take some time to discuss your dreams and goals - both big and small. Invite each person to share something they hope to learn, a talent they wish to grow, or a way they want to serve others in Christ's love. Revisit traditions that bring comfort - Such as a Sunday walk in the park or a cozy Friday movie night - and sprinkle in new rituals that spark joy and connection. Remember, the smallest acts often become the most cherished memories. 

Amidst the busyness of the season, don't forget to savor the beauty of creation. Notice the shifting colors outside your window, the gentle hum of crickets, the first scent of woodsmoke. These everyday miracles are reminders of God's presence, woven through each season and every change. 

As you welcome September, approach each day with expectancy and hope. In the laughter spilling around the table, the prayers whispered before dawn, and the gentle forgiveness offered after a long week, your family writes a living story of renewal. Embrace this month as a canvas for faith, creativity, and grace - trusting that with each new beginning, God's love is ever near. 

When the road is bumpy... and when it's too smooth....

 

If I'm being honest, some weeks feel like a series of closed doors: 

  • plans unravel
  • conversations go sideways
  • even the simplest tasks seem resistant to completion
I know, I know... It’s easy to feel discouraged when things don’t work out the way we hoped, dreamed, and even envisioned for the long haul. But lately, I’ve been reminded that sometimes, that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be.

I have found myself reminding my inner soul that not every “no” is a failure. Sometimes it’s a redirection. A pause. A gentle nudge from the Lord saying, “This isn’t for you right now.” And while it’s hard to let go of what we thought was best, there’s peace in trusting that He sees the full picture—even when we’re staring at a mess of puzzle pieces. I am reminded in these times that God has blessed this mess (me) and that He will see me through His plan.

And while that can be a blessing, it can also be a moment to pause and ask, “Is this ease a gift… or a distraction?”

  • 🛑 When things go too perfectly, I won’t rush ahead. I’ll stop and seek the Lord’s wisdom.
  • 🙏 In both the chaos and the calm, I’ll trust that God’s plan is better than mine.

If you’re in a season of frustration, or one that feels suspiciously easy, maybe this is your reminder to pause. To pray. To ask not just what you’re doing, but why—and who you’re following.

Because the goal isn’t just to move forward. It’s to move forward with purpose, with peace, and with the One who knows the way.

You see, I have adult children, so the crafting over the years has evolved from kids crafts to what I want for my own home which is a bit more adult in nature. So what’s a mom to do? St. Patrick's Day celebration ideas

 


This month, we have the opportunity to celebrate a Christian legend! Before we get to the ideas I have for your celebrations, let’s dig into a bit of the history behind St. Patrick’s Day. Did you know:

-        St. Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland, but he was born in Roman Britian in the late 4th century.

-        He was kidnapped at the young age of 16 and enslaved in Ireland.

-        While he did escape, he returned to convert the Irish to Christianity.

-        By the time of his death, he had established monasteries, churches, and schools.

-        On March 17, 461 he died.

-        In 1737, the  17th of March became the day to celebrate the feast of St. Patrick

In honor of St. Patrick, many celebrate in different ways. Here’s a list of some ideas:

How have things been handled?

 

As a busy working mom, sometimes I feel like things haven’t quite been handled as eloquently as I would have liked. There is stress in my life that just seems to take over. Between work and personal commitments, something’s got to give. Am I alone here or is there anyone else feeling similarly?

 

Let me give you a little information about me. I am a 43-year-old married mom of a 22-year-old daughter and 18-year-old daughter. My oldest has some special needs, but the medical system here is failing her because she isn’t handicapped ENOUGH to get a diagnosis. I was even told by multiple medical professionals “Yes, I can see she’s high-functioning autistic, but because she’s over the age of 18, I cannot give you an official diagnosis.” You wanna talk about discouraging. That doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt last year hearing those words for the third time in as many months. I felt like I’d failed my child.

 

On the other hand, her sister has anxiety and has for years. She’s worked very hard to be where she is and is graduating from high school a year earlier than we originally thought because of her hard work! She doubles up on classes and is very active in our church youth program. That being said, her anxiety has to be accounted for in the amount of stress.

 

Then let’s talk cars. Four years ago, my husband was in a car accident that totaled our only car. After that we bought our 2016 Chevy Equinox and within 6 months we were putting nearly $5,000 into rebuilding the engine. Let’s fast forward a bit and we’ve replaced the motor on one of the windows, redone the brakes, had the suspension fixed, and most recently had her at the shop because the alarm wouldn’t stop blaring. Of course the dealership couldn’t figure out what was wrong.

 

Now on the other hand, 3 months after buying the Equinox, we bought a 2013 Ford Escape. This car is super fun to drive, but then she doesn’t like to go on road trips. After our trip to Ohio last summer, we had a trip to Tennessee (3 hours away instead of 10) and we go out to start the car and nope. She’s not starting. We do a parking lot transfer to the other car. Then six months later, we had her packed up to drive to New York for Thanksgiving… She stalls leaving the gas station before getting on the road. Welp, it’s time to go home (less than a mile away) and do another parking lot change. A few weeks later, we figure out that it’s bad gas we’d gotten and nothing wrong with the car.

 

I tell you all of these things to say that in each of these instances, words were said that perhaps shouldn’t have. We should have handled ourselves differently. But in hindsight, we can look back and see those experiences as opportunities to do better. What will we do in future? Well, for our girls, we are biding our time until the youngest graduates high school this spring and are evaluating what to do next. We aren’t limited by geography after she’s done with school so we are really thinking through things. Do we want to stay in the area we are at, would we like to be closer to friends and family out of state? Or do we want to do something completely different? Only time will tell. Until next time, think about something you’ve done recently and evaluate if you could have handled yourself differently.

Welcoming Spring: Tips for a fresh start

 This month, we will embark on yet another beautiful season and perfect opportunity to begin as fresh as the flowers are sure to bloom. Spring is the perfect time to refresh and rejuvenate! Here are my top 10 tips to make the most of the season: 

  1. Spring Cleaning: We all tend to gather an excess of clutter through the winter months. Clear out the clutter and deep clean your living space. This is a great time to donate those items you no longer need. Remember, one person's trash is another's treasure! 
  2. Garden Preparation: No matter if you have a farm, flowerbed, or container garden, now is the time to start planting flowers, herbs, and vegetables. If you aren't currently, maybe consider creating a small herb garden or adding colorful blooms to your patio. 
  3. Outdoor Activities: Now is the perfect time to take advantage of the beautiful weather by going for a hike, having a picnic, or family bike ride. Enjoy the beautiful scenery around you as it blossoms. 
  4. Seasonal allergies: If you're like me and have seasonal allergies, keep an eye on those pollen forecasts and keep the allergy meds in stock! You  might even add some immune boosting vitamins to your daily routine to give you an extra boost of protection. 
  5. Wardrobe transition: It's that time! Let's all swap out the heavy winter clothes for lighter and brighter spring attire. Bring out the pastels and floral prints! 
  6. Healthy eating: Incorporate fresh spring produce into your diet, such as asparagus, strawberries, and peas. Light and colorful meals can boost your energy. 
  7. Home decor: Refresh your home with spring-themed decor. Add some fresh flowers, bright colors, and light fabrics to brighten up your space. 
  8. Fitness routine: Revamp your fitness routine by taking your workouts outside. Try running, yoga in the park, or joining an outdoor fitness class. 
  9. Travel plans: Spring is the perfect time to get away for the weekend or plan future trips! I know we will be having Mack start planning our trips for the year soon as her first travel agent customers! Consider visiting a new destination or exploring local attractions.   10. Mental health: Take the time to practice some self-care and mindfulness. Spring is a great season to set new goals, start journaling (blogging), or pick up a new hobby.

When life gets busy

 Ya know, life has a way of suddenly accelerating its pace. Sometimes it leaves us breathless and scrambling to keep up. Whether it's a surge in work responsibilities, personal commitments, or unexpected events, the sensation of being overwhelmed is all too familiar. I've found that the key to navigating these hectic periods of my life lies in the adoption of strategies that help me maintain balance and perspective. I thought I'd share some of those with you today as a way to get back into writing regularly. 

1. Understanding the busy periods

Busy periods can strike at any time, and often they appear with no warning. These times may be triggered by many factors such as: 

  • seasonal work demands 
  • significant life changes (i.e., moving, expanding the family)
  • a series of social events
Regardless of the cause, the impact can feel like an InstaPot of stress and fatigue. 

2. Identifying triggers

To effectively manage busy periods, I've found it essential to identify the triggers. While it's not always easy to do, it's an important step none-the-less. 
  • Are there specific times of the year when work demands increase? 
  • Do certain personal events tend to cluster together? 
By recognizing these patterns, you can prepare yourself and make a plan for the impending rush. 

3. Determining your capacity

Just like a project manager assesses the capacity of the team, you have to remember to take stock of what you can handle. It's crucial to take the time to honestly assess your physical, emotional, and mental capacity. Understanding limits will allow you to make informed decisions about how much you can realistically endure. One of the most important things I remind myself is that overcommitting often is when I experience burnout, so it's important to set healthy boundaries and prioritize tasks. 

4. Strategies for Managing a busy life

As a busy working mom of 2 adult children, one who is in her senior year of high school, I understand the need for applying management strategies to my life more than you might imagine. You have to do the same. Once you have identified your triggers and assessed what you can take on, the next step to sanity in the stress is to implement strategies that will assist in managing your time and energy in such a way that these busy times have a lower impact on your life. 

5. Prioritization

Remember, life is a huge project and we are constantly on the project life cycle. As the project managers of our lives, we have to recognize that not all tasks are created equal. While some tasks are urgent - like paying bills that are due this week, and others can wait. Use tools like the Eisenhower Matrix to categorize tasks and focus on what's truly important in your life during this season. This will help you with allocation of time and resources and help you to see where you might need to ask for help. 

6. Delegation

Continuing on the thought of asking for help, remember, you can't and shouldn't have to do everything yourself. Your project team should consist of pillars of support. Delegating tasks to your spouse, children, and even friends or family can help to lighten the load. It also empowers others by giving them opportunities to contribute and grow. I like to think of it in the sense of my bible studies. I am learning over and over again that it is more blessed to give than receive. I have to remember that I can't be the only one giving and blessing others. I have to allow others the opportunity to bless me as well. 

7. Time management

We all feel the crunch of time sometimes. What we need to remember is how to manage it during those busy periods of our lives. A few techniques you might use could include time blocking and setting aside self-care. These are incredibly important. It's like scheduling time to play your cozy video game or get a manicure. While these might seem very trivial, it allows you to disconnect from the stress of life to recharge. 

8. Mindfulness and stress management

Incorporating mindfulness practices like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga can help manage stress levels. These practices encourage a calm, centered mind, making it easier to navigate the busy times. In my life, I find it most important to make an intentional decision to start my day with a little praise and worship music followed by prayer and reading my bible. On the days when life gets too busy, I feel like things just don't get off on the right foot. 

9. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle

It's in those busy times that we tend to neglect our health. However, maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are crucial for sustaining energy and focus. Simple changes like meal prepping or shorter workouts can make a significant difference. Also, if you don't like traditional exercise, think about breaking out the wii and putting on one of the dance games. You get to have fun, disconnect, dance, and get fit all at the same time! 

Leveraging Technology

In today's digital age, technology can be a powerful ally in managing a busy life. From productivity apps to smart home devices, there are numerous tools available to streamline tasks and enhance efficiency. That said, it's also very important to remember that it's easy to allow technology to invade our lives in a way that it takes over. Be diligent in remembering to use it as a tool and not allow it to rule your entire life.

Apps like Trello or Asana can help you keep track of tasks, set reminders, and collaborate with others.  These tools provide a visual representation of your workload, making it easier to manage and prioritize. Additionally, you might consider having your smart speaker give you verbal reminders about things you should be doing regularly. For example, if you take a medication once a week, the smart speaker can tell you once a week on a schedule that you need to take that medication. 

Smart Home Devices

Smart home devices like virtual assistants, smart lighting, and automated cleaning appliances can save time and reduce stress. They allow you to manage your home environment more efficiently, giving you more bandwidth to focus on other tasks.

The Importance of Self-Care

Amid the hustle and bustle, self-care often takes a back seat. However, it is one of the most critical aspects of managing a busy life. Taking time for yourself ensures that you are mentally and physically equipped to handle the demands placed upon you.

Scheduling Downtime

Just as you schedule work tasks, it's important to schedule downtime. This could be as simple as a daily walk, reading a book, or engaging in a hobby. Downtime allows you to recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Seeking Support

Don't hesitate to seek support from friends, family, or professionals. Sometimes, just talking about your feelings and challenges can provide relief and perspective. Professional support from a therapist or counselor can also be beneficial in managing stress and maintaining mental health.
